Map Spotlight #2 - Cabin

January 22nd, 2011 by Dman757 Introduction

This is the second installment of our "Map Spotlights" be sure to check out the previous update if you haven't already.

Map Spotlight #2 - Cabin by Nay0r

Alone on the banks of Lake Champlain sits an innocent looking cabin. Once a sleepy weekend getaway in Vermont, now a hellish lifeline to a few scavengers held up in a dreary attic. Weeks go by and the once optimistic visions of a now mythical sounding rescue start to fade. The walking dead seem of little consequence to the ever growing fear of death, as rations and patience wear thin the last living inhabitants of this forgotten shelter decide it is time to act. Do the survivors attempt to signal help or risk a watery trek across the Lake into New York?

Feature Trailer - nmo_cabin

Created by Nay0r, Cabin is an revision of a map lost to NMRiH's development past. Remodeled and tailor made to the games objective gamemode it is but a hint of it's previous self. Tight spaces, randomized pathing & objectives bring this forgotten cabin back from development hell.

Q & A With the Designer

Q: Now this map is a remake, although what exactly does that mean. Did you completely start from scratch or did you modify the the existing map.
A: I totally remade cabin from scratch only using rough wall/roof/floor sizes from the original vmf map file, this was only about 75% of the main cabin itself, the rest I created myself including the entire outside area.

Q: As some of the long time followers of the mod might know cabin has been around quite a while. It was even released for Zombie Panic: Source at one point. Could you give a little insight on this map and how it's changed with your latest edition.
A: As stated above most of the cabin itself is similar not exactly the same but how I thought it would work well, and the outside is totally new I suppose this is where most of the changes take place so it fits nmrih more as its changed a lot since the original cabin was in development.

Q: What were some of the challenges that came up with remaking the map this way?
A: Most likely the most challenging features were getting parts of the complex maze of rooms built together the rest of the map was very straight forward.

Q: What sort of gameplay can players expect from this map?
A: Unlike broadway which is quite open combat, cabin is very close quarters combat and really requires the survivors to work together to get through the level, the maps objectives are also setup in a way that you can have several routes through which makes it more random.

Q: Is there anything you would like to point out about the map like a favorite room or objective?
A: The overall feel and sounds will really creep you out, I know it well and I still get parts where I get freaked out.

Q: This is your second map for NMRiH, correct? What else can fans expect down the line?
A: Currently planning on a 3rd encounter which will be based on the popular walking dead series and will be named atlanta but I don't plan on giving out any more details yet, cabin and broadway are still in development so any new screenshots in future media are subject to change of course.

Map Spotlight #1 - Broadway

December 9th, 2010 by Xendrid Introduction

Do you know why I love this time of year? No it isn't the yuletide in the air, it is the sweet scent of good news from games and mods! This post marks the beginning of a new segment called Map Spotlights. It details each map in NMRiH for you, the fans, that gives special insight into the environments you'll be fighting for your life in.

Be sure to stay tuned for upcoming spotlights!

Map Spotlight #1 - Broadway by nay0r

This small strip of metropolis looms in the shadow of a central New York railway. And in those shadows are countless numbers of the infected. A light sheet of rain blankets the streets as helicopters roar in the heights. Sirens from multiple sources are wailing in the distance as if the world hasn’t yet ended. The military has come and gone leaving survivors trapped in the Broadway. Held up in an abandoned building across from an aged and fabled theater, the survivors wait in bleak anticipation while dead hands claw at the doors of their safe house. When it becomes clear that help is not coming, the group is faced with the terrible notion that rescue is solely up to them.

Created by nay0r, Broadway is the first map to be fitted with complete game play from start to finish. The map was conceived well before an underlying foundation was set for the mod and has since been delicately crafted into a horrific masterpiece. Because of its age, the map is currently the most linear in NMRiH’s environments. However, it is also the most polished and detailed.

Q & A With the Designer

Q: What are your general thoughts on the map?
A: It's come along way and it was initially planned to be a bit bigger than it is now but the best thing was the whole overhead train line area.

Q: What were some of the obstacles that you encountered during development?
A: Probably the angled street. I wanted it to be pretty epic area but it did cause some problems and a few rooms in that area were eventually
deleted out from the map.

Q: What was the most "fun" part of the map to work on? The least fun?
A: The fun part was getting it to look the way I wanted it. The least fun was getting the sky how I wanted it. I did quite a few tests on either to stick with a foggy setup or a proper sky.

Q: Any future plans for Broadway?
A: Hard to say really as I feel like I am improving as a mapper all of the time so a future plan would be a complete remake maybe in a years time.

Monthly Update - June/July 2010

August 13th, 2010 by Dman757 Introduction
Do you know what time it is, No? Well neither do I because that's how things work on valve standard time, getting things done "soon!" So for all three of you that don't follow our Moddb page or YouTube account, its time for the (bi)monthly update! We have picture, videos and even an audio log, oh boy! So lets get right to it.

General Announcements/News
Few short announcements for this week. First off we have a new page/group/account on both Twitter and Facebook. They are a way of keeping in touch for when these monthly updates are a bit slow coming. We want to keep people relatively engaged than just dumping a truck load of images every couple of months. Expect a little more "behind the scenes" type of posts on those respective pages. As for our other pages we have begun revamping layouts and backgrounds, Bucky went ahead and spruced up our YouTube page for this months update and SickJoe is creating few things for our Moddb page as well.

Mod News
So a lot has gone on in the past two months but I will try to keep it short. In modeling news We now have a few new weapons such as the MP5 and Fire Extinguisher which you can see renders for below. A large focus has been put on vehicles from firetrucks to pickup trucks our arsenal of motorized driving machines is growing ever larger. As usual we have a myriad of small little props and textures that don't make it to these updates due to their small nature. Yet you might catch a glimpse of those props in our map screen shots. That brings us to the mapping side of things. I mentioned a few months back that SotaPoika was working on a new remake but neglected to say which maps as it wasn't official yet but he is remaking Darth_Brushes old City of Dawn map. No screenshots yet but the layout is pretty much finished he has been texturing and laying out props the past few weeks. Vincent has made some great progress in his map which is newly named nmo_nightfall. We have some new screenshots below for nmo_hospital by _rc which is pretty much finished, he is currently setting up objectives. Animations are going along swimmingly, Sn1pe has been working all of our weapons getting placeholders for testing as well as working on final cuts, you can see four animation demos below.

Voice talents of Maxx and Dman757
*Notes Coming Soon*

Cars, Cars & Trucks
Oh My!

Guns & Blunt Fire Extinguishing Objects

MP5
First up it's an MP5, if you've ever played a fps you've seen one. Maxx might say he spent hours on this thing but whatever, just ignore him and tell him to get back in his cage and back to work. Oh did I mention we have a animation demo below as well?

Fire Extinguisher
If firetrucks aren't enough to put out that fire in your heart we now have a fire extinguisher. Dual purpose for all your beating and flame retardant needs this is the tool for you!

Smith and Weston Revamp
You might bee thinking, "Hey, I've seen this before what a rip off!" To that I have 6 little words:

  • Remake
  • Evaluated
  • Via
  • Ample
  • Mod
  • Playtests

Anyway, Surfa decided it's needed to be touched up.

nmo_hospital
We haven't shown many images for _RC's hospital map so in order to change that we took three. Well, we really took four but Bigfoot decided to make a guest appearance.

Concept Art & New Wallpaper
SickJoe has taken time off from fighting rabid trees in the wilderness to draw the new concept art for the Marine.

SickJoe and I made this art into a wallpaper to spread some desktop love. There are two versions one with text the other without, more resolutions coming soon to a front page near you!

With Logo
1920x1200
1920x1080

Animation Demos

Sn1pe has been working hard on these animations the past few months. Some still need a little tweaking but even for WIP animations they look great!
