If you haven't heard of the Total War series, then I suggest playing at least one of the games.
Anyways, Shogun 2 is a sequel to the first game that was made in 2000, the game features a medieval Japan setting, with 9 different factions.
It looks pretty decent, I'll check it out when it comes out.

I absolutely loved the original, but now they're adding some mythological stuff and I'm unsure how that'll work out... but I'm still anticipating it.

Mythological? What? I heard of the new "Hero" concept, where a unit could like defeat an entire army. But never mythological stuff.

"Commander our men appear to be getting attacked by a swarming mass of tentacles?"
The original was pretty fun, even if the battles almost always turned into a gigantic cluster fuck of blood and little polygon corpses.
So I suppose this might be worth a gander

Well, you sort of answered your own question. The Kensei "sword saints" of legend are going to be exaggerated beyond any realistic bound.

Ah, but they will be very expensive, so I wouldn't worry too much.
Also, in Rome: Total War, generals were unrealistically strong.
